SHEAR1
UNIAXIAL SHEAR TESTER
SHEAR1
–
Uniaxial
Shear
Tester
is
a
compact,
cost-effective
alternative
to
the
Superpave
Shear
Tester
for
asphalt
testing.
Used
with
Universal
Testing
Machines
(UTM)
or
Nottingham
Asphalt
Tester
(NAT),
it
measures
shear
properties
of
asphalt
mixtures
to
assess
resistance
to
permanent
deformations,
calculate
pavement
rutting,
optimize
mix
design, and perform quality checks.
SHEAR1
can
test
both
laboratory-prepared
samples
and
cores
taken
directly
from
pavements,
applying
shear
stress
in
the
direction
corresponding
to
real
traffic
loads
for
more
accurate,
real-world
results.
Invented
at
UC
Berkeley
and
Czech
Technical
University,
it
provides
results
highly
correlated
to
AASHTO
T320-07
standards.
Requiring
only
standard
lab
equipment
such
as
a
UTM,
NAT,
or
Gyratory
Compactor,
SHEAR1
is
highly
economical,
versatile,
and
significantly
simpler
than
a
Superpave
Shear
Tester
or
Hamburg-Wheel
Tracking
Device,
reducing
acquisition
and
operational
costs
up
to
tenfold
while maintaining reliable performance.
•
Simple sample preparation
•
Can be used for testing laboratory samples or samples taken directly from roads
•
Only standard laboratory equipment is needed: UTM or NAT and a Gyratory Compactor
•
Shear stress is applied in the direction that corresponds to real traffic load, more accurately reflecting real world conditions
•
SHEAR1 acquisition and operational costs are up to 10 times lower than a Hamburg-Wheel Tracking Device or a Superpave Shear Tester
MAIN APPLICATIONS
•
Asphalt mixture design and optimization
•
Pavement maintenance and quality checks
•
Assessment of asphalt mixture resistance to permanent deformations
•
Calculate pavement rutting
•
The performance of SHEAR1 has been tested and compared to the Superpave Shear Tester
ECONOMICAL
•
Low initial costs
•
Considerably lower operational costs compared to using Hamburg-Wheel Tracking Device or Superpave Shear Tester
•
Only standard laboratory equipment is needed (UTM, NAT, Gyratory Compactor)
VERSATILITY
•
Can be used for testing laboratory samples or samples taken directly from roads
•
Asphalt mixture design
•
Pavement maintenance and quality checks
•
Asphalt mixture component optimization
•
Assessment of asphalt mixture resistance to permanent deformations
ACCURACY
•
Shear stress is applied in direction corresponding to the stress created from traffic load in pavement
•
Testing shear properties of asphalt mixtures is therefore closer to real conditions
•
The performance of SHEAR1 has been tested and compared to Superpave Shear Tester. It has shown highly correlated results as published
by the inventor
